Engagement Diary March 24, 2006

I am not engaged. Nor am I writing this to auction myself off for engagement. I thought I'd start with that just to alleviate those who clicked on this link thinking I found that special someone. Anyways...

It started with two simple premises: We were tired of only betting on sports and we all thought our friend, AMS, was definitely going to get engaged (to SW) in the next twelve months. Since that was the case, why not make his engagement fun for everyone by betting.

On Wednesday, January 11, 2006, eight of us got together and auctioned off the 44 remaining weeks in 2006 starting with the second week of February (there were three weeks that were out of play because AMS was going to be in New Zealand. Each person put in $25 and the total bid could not exceed that amount. Bidding for each week started at $1 and would increase in increments of $0.50. Very simple.

The entire auction went surprisingly quick with some key statistics below:
Most weeks: Dave (12)
Least weeks: Jayble (3)
Average weeks: 5.5 per person
Only person to not use all their money : Dave ($1)
Most consecutive weeks: Dave (6)
Most $ spent on one week: Andy ($14.50 for 6/4)
Least $ spent on one week: $0.50 (various people)

The only other rule added was that if AMS found out about the bet before he's engaged, then the guilty person owes another $5 to the pool.

Let the games begin...

February 5th: The first week of the auction. This week actually goes from 2/5 - 2/10 and then from 3/3 - 3/4 since AMS is going to be on vacation from 2/11 to 3/2 in New Zealand. Andy has this week. I don't think AMS would propose before he leaves for New Zealand. I mean as much as SW would love it, I think she'd appreciate it just a bit more if Andy was around.

February 7th: It is now Tuesday and I doubt it will happen this week. Still, Andy picked this week up for only $0.50. Either it was the worst 50 cents spent or the best. The only two days available are the Friday and Saturday that AMS gets back, and I'm hoping he'll either be too jet lagged or interested in basketball to propose.

February 8th: Crap. I was just IMing with Jeff and Brad and it looks like word on the bathroom walls is that AMS may propose when he gets back from New Zealand. When that is exactly is TBD but it pushes the odds in favor of the early weeks. Fuck. I bid heavily on June.

February 11th: Just had lunch with AMS at BW3. He indicated that he has already purchased the ring and that it could happen soon after he gets back from New Zealand. My only hope is to delay him until June which will prove exceedingly difficult. It looks like Geoff, Jeff, or Andy, or possibly Brad W. will win the bet. Screw my overanalyzing!

February 15th: OK. I've let the new info sink in for a few days and now am able to look at the situation more clearly. I let Brad in on the news and he told me that AMS will definitely propose early; His exact words, "Dude, once you have the ring it is the hardest thing to do to sit on it. Trust me." I trust him. There is only one logical conclusion: I've decided I have to delay the engagement yet not torpedo the relationship. Must win bet. Must sabotage others.

February 20th: I've come up with the following plans:
A. Spread rumors of an affair
B. Mention to AMS that SW told me about her dream proposal.
C. Place AMS in a coma until June.
D. Place SW in a coma until June.
That is all I have so far.

February 23rd: More plans:
E. Find out if there is some new information that I can exploit. For example, "Oh AMS, you only want two kids? I was talking to SW and she wanted 50."
F. Hmmm, what if AMS was lost when his plane crashed? Note to self: Research Dharma project and make sure AMS lands on non-Dharma island that is still remote.
G. Send letter to SW or AMS indicating second thoughts on relationship.
H. Pre-emptively propose to SW.
I. Pre-emptively propose to AMS.
J. Develop time-travel machine to go back and bid heavily on the week that AMS actually gets engaged.

February 24th: I just IMed with AMS. Sadly, I haven't analyzed each of my plans to determine the best one. I wasted an opportunity. Fuck.

March 1st: Over the last week I've gone through the 10 plans...
A. Spread rumors of an affair
Anyone that knows AMS or SW knows that neither would have an affair. Curse their uncompromising morals!

B. Mention to AMS that SW told me about her dream proposal
If the last year has taught me anything, it's that I know nothing going on in a girl's head. AMS would see right through me. Plus, I'd probably mention that SW wanted ewoks in her wedding - a dead giveaway that I am making it up.

C. Place AMS in a coma until June.
D. Place SW in a coma until June.
I would attempt these, but my ninja skills are not as developed as I would like. I may kill them or more likely, they may put me in a coma...AMS and SW are tough.

E. Find out if there is some new information that I can exploit. For example, "Oh AMS, you only want two kids? I was talking to SW and she wanted 50." This is not a bad plan but I think they may have already discussed this at some point. I will keep this as backup just in case.

F. Hmmm, what if AMS was lost when his plane crashed? Note to self: Research Dharma project and make sure AMS lands on non-Dharma island that is still remote.
I have been watching too much Lost.

G. Send letter to SW or AMS indicating second thoughts on relationship.
Again, neither would believe that the other was having second thoughts.

H. Pre-emptively propose to SW.
I. Pre-emptively propose to AMS.
Hmmm...I am quite charming...

J. Develop time-travel machine to go back and bid heavily on the week that AMS actually gets engaged.
Where would I even get a Flux Capacitor and AMC Delorean? Where?

Crap...okay, so I have no plans. Better to keep Plan E as backup and rethink Plan B. I may not know shit about girls, but I am friends with a lot of girls, and some aren't even that crazy. I will have to reach out to them and research their dream proposals and get the best ideas from each one. Excellent, then all I have to do is talk to AMS.

March 3rd: Andy is back. I just chatted with him on IM and he's getting back up to speed on the last three weeks. I have developed a story that SW would like to involved the following in her dream proposal: doves, a hot-air balloon, Madison, Wisconsin. Now I'll have to meet with AMS. Excellent. Excellent.

March 5th: Well AMS is engaged. He text message'd me while I was at dinner last night. I didn't think anything of it. I assumed he was still jet-lagged and was just seeing if I was out. The next afternoon I awoke to find a missed call. Text message = Typical AMS. Phone call = Highly Unusual AMS. Either someone has AMS' phone, something bad happened, or something good happened. Well, as I found out the next morning, it was definitely something good. He's engaged. Looks like Andy won making it the best 50 cents ever spent. Well played Andy, well played.

March 16th: Below is a transcript of Andy's phenomenal buy:
Jayble: Ok, week A, starting bid $1
Andy: 0.50
Jeff: Ok, let's move this along. Nobody else wants to bid, so andy gets it for .50.
Jayble: going once, going twice, going 3x - sold apw

March 17th: Auction highlight:
Jeff: I can't believe all you sucker bought weeks during March Madness.
To be fair, I never would have bought before NCAA basketball ended either.
Carter: Rash says in email, "So I guess that means that the Memorial Day O/U is pretty solid. At this point, though, I think I’d take the over."
Again to be fair, I would have taken the over too.

March 23rd: I didn't know if anyone wanted to see how the rest of the weeks were auctioned off, but in case you did, the remainder of 2006 is below.
